Even in death, Sitting Bull was making an impression. On this day in 1891, the Winona Times reported Sitting Bull’s cabin was en route to Chicago for the World Trade Fair. The cabin had been on display in Mandan and was taken apart and numbered so that it could be put together exactly as it was before being loaded on the train for Chicago.
The cabin still showed evidence of the life and death of the famous medicine man. The interior was smoked by fires and infused with the scent of tobacco. Bullet holes and blood stains marked Sitting Bull’s final struggle. With the history and popularity of its late owner, the Times was sure the cabin would be a major attraction at the fair.
