Cenex-Harvest States says it will build a nearly $3 billion fertilizer plant at the Spiritwood Energy Park near Jamestown.
In a statement, CHS says the plant will be the largest single investment in the cooperative’s history – as well as the single largest investment project in North Dakota’s history.
"This is a huge investment," said Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND). "It's a huge win in terms of using gas from the Bakken that's now being flared. And it's a big win for farmers here in North Dakota."
Hoeven says farmers will now have a local source for anhydrous, rather than getting it from overseas.
"It will be a dependable, low cost supply," said Hoeven.
Hoeven says he’s now working on a guarantee from the federal Department of Energy on the cost of financing the plan.
CHS has not scheduled a groundbreaking – but plans to have the plant up and running in 2018. The plant will employ 160 to 180 people.
