Bismarck-based University of Mary could see a big freshman class this fall.
“We're expecting about 33 percent more commitments from incoming freshman than at this time last year,” said Director of undergraduate admissions at U-Mary Chip Hinton. He said that could mean a freshman class of 475 to 500.
"This would be the largest freshmen class in the history of the University of Mary,” Hinton said.
To what does he attribute that interest?
“We're not the best kept secret anymore," Hinton said. "Everyone knows we are the most seriously affordable Catholic university in America. It's just starting to resonate.”
Hinton points to growing interest from students around the country and beyond. As an example, he cites Minnesota.
"Over the years, we've had more than a 400 percent increase in that particular area," Hinton said. "It's just amazing."
Hinton said U-Mary may also have to start a “waiting list.” However, he said that's just in the consideration stage.
“We want to be prudent to those folks who have already determined they will be coming to the University," Hinton said. "We just want to let them know we might have to go to a waiting list, if this trend continues.”
Hinton also said the year-round campus concept – where students can finish their degrees more quickly – is also a big positive for the University.
