Inside Energy: Funding for the oil patch

It’s a touchy subject for energy states: how much oil tax money should go back to the places where it’s produced to help with infrastructure needs? Emily Guerin reports on how Gov. Dalrymple's new budget proposal answers that question.

Oil produced in North Dakota is making the state rich. But the impacts is overwhelming local governments. They simply can’t keep up with road repairs and new construction.

Currently, the state shares 25 percent of oil tax revenue with oil patch counties. That’s less than states like Colorado and Wyoming. But Gov. Jack Dalrymple wants lawmakers to up that to 60 percent.

“With the funding formula adjustment, the gross oil production tax will generate $1.7 billion for the oil counties.”

That should help placate officials in western North Dakota who said the state wasn’t helping them out enough.
