North Dakota to have second oil refinery

By the end of 2014, the state of North Dakota will have a second oil refinery.

Governor Jack Dalrymple made the announcement from the State Capitol in Bismarck.  He says the new refinery will primarily churn out diesel fuel.  He says the refinery is a joint venture between MDU Resources and Calumet Refining - called Dakota Prairie Refining.  It will be located near Dickinson in southwestern North Dakota.

"This group will build and operate a refinery capable of processing 20 thousand barrels of Bakken crude oil per day, and the plant will produce primarily diesel fuel, but also other hydrocarbons," Dalrymple says.

Dalrymple says having the refinery in the state will increase the use of Bakken crude within North Dakota, it will be another significant supply of diesel for farmers and truckers - and, Dalrymple says it will be owned and operated in the private sector.  Dalrymple says the refinery will also create over a hundred new jobs.  He says construction on the new refinery may begin as early as this spring.
