Record Number of Fishing Licenses in North Dakota

Last year's fishing license sales were at a record high in North Dakota.

Greg Power is Fisheries Chief for North Dakota Game and Fish. He said about 218,000 fishing licenses were sold from 2012 to 2013.

Power said these numbers include both resident and nonresident fishing licenses. He said the licenses were fairly evenly distributed throughout the state.

Power said two decades of rain have made for a major increase of water on North Dakota's landscape. He says this translates into fishing lakes.

"A lot of these used to be small shallow slews and now they are 20-30 feet deep lakes, some of them 6,000 acres, so they are large fisheries," Power said. "Overtime we've been able to develop them, get easements from landowners; we stock fish and build boat ramps so people can have access."

Power said Game and Fish suspects that this summer will also have a record number of fishing license sales.
