The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the vast majority of drivers slow down when they come upon construction zones.

Fines are higher in those zones – the minimum is $80. North Dakota Highway Patrol Sergeant Tom Iverson says the fines are aggressive -- for a reason.

"There's numerous workers that are working in that area, and they work in real close proximity to the driving land," said Iverson. "So we need vehicles to slow down."

Tom Iverson says as of the end of June, troopers have written 314 tickets for speeding in work zones. He says there have been 53 property crashes, 13 injuries and one fatality.

"This construction season, we were allocated approximately 1000 hours of overtime," said Iverson. "we do have our troopers out there working those construction zones, making sure we keep the workers safe, and the travelling motorists safe. For the most part, people are good about it. They slow down."

A new fine structure is now in effect in Minnesota. The minimum fine for speeding in a construction zone goes from $212 to $300.
