Armed robber in downtown Fargo exchanges fire with officers

Two Fargo police officers will be placed on administrative leave following shots fired during an armed robbery in downtown Fargo.

Police Chief Dave Todd says a white male armed with a handgun entered the Howard Johnson hotel in downtown Fargo early this afternoon (Thursday) and demanded money from the front desk.  He says the suspect fired one shot inside the hotel.  He says the suspect was given the money and then fled on foot.  Todd says Fargo Police then met the fleeing suspect by a nearby gas station, when the suspect began firing off several more shots.  Todd says the officers responded by returning fire, and the suspect was struck by one of those shots.  He says the suspect is now being cared for at Sanford hospital.  Todd says it is routine protocol for officers involved in shootings to be placed on administrative leave while investigation into the incident is conducted.

Todd says the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been contacted to assist in the investigation into the response to the incident.
