There could be an attempt to make the day after Thanksgiving a state holiday.
The effort began with a suggestion from North Dakota college faculty and staff.
"It's a pretty skeleton crew that's on our campuses the day after Thanksgiving," said NDSU President Dean Bresciani. "The people at the lowest paid staff level are the ones most likely still having to come to work that day."
Board of Higher Education President Nick Hacker said the campuses aren’t offering classes that day anyway.
"Effectively, most of our campuses are about half-shuttered on that day," Hacker said.
Hacker said since NDUS staff brought up the idea, there have been discussions with the Governor’s office and Legislative leadership concerning making it a state holiday.
"This is a statutory change that would need to be made," Hacker said.
Hacker said other states, including Montana and Iowa, have made that day a state holiday.
