North Dakota has $19 million available for heating assistance to low income households this winter.
It’s through the “LIHEAP” program.
North Dakota Department of Human Services economic assistance director Michele Gee said assistance is based on household income.
"In North Dakota, we look at incomes up to 60 percent of the state median income," Gee said. "For example, a household of three would qualify with income of $49,021 per year, and for a household of two, $39,600 per year."
Last year, more than 13,000 people signed up for heating assistance. She said so far in this heating season, which began October first, just over 10,000 have qualified.
"Seventy percent of the participating households that we serve include elderly, disabled or with children ages 5 and younger," Gee said.
To apply for assistance, Gee said you can contact your county social service office, or contact Community Options. There is also an application form avaiable on the North Dakota DHS website.
