After joining a lawsuit challenging North Dakota’s ban on same-sex marriage, a Fargo-area couple is looking for change in 2015. Celeste and Amber Carlson are legally married in Minnesota, but the union is not recognized in North Dakota. The couple signed on to the lawsuit last June, and Celeste Carlson says they are now waiting to see what happens…
“…Both sides finished submitting their briefs in September and Judge Erickson hasn’t done much with it. The case hasn’t really moved on.”
Carlson says with the local case at a standstill, she was encouraged once again when, late last week, the U-S Supreme Court announced it would take up the issue of gay marriage…
“…I have every reason to believe – base on what’s happened thus far with the U-S Supreme Court – that they are going to decide in our favor. And I’m hoping that we will be looking at marriage equality nationwide for everybody by the end of June.”
The North Dakota ban on same-sex marriage has been in place for 10-years. Similar bans have been lifted and same-sex marriages are now allowed and recognized in 36 other states.
