Heitkamp says vote could be coming soon on the Export-Import Bank

It appears the US House will vote on funding the Export-Import Bank.

The bank helps overseas buyers get financing to purchase US products such as airplanes and heavy equipment. Its charter expired June 30th.

Dozens of Republicans joined Democrats in signing what is known as a “discharge petition” – meaning if 218 signatures are gathered, it would force a vote.

"This proves our point that there is plenty of support in the House for the Ex-Im Bank," said Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND). "We know there's support in the Senate."

Heitkamp says since the charter expired, the bank has not been able to finance any new deals.

"You see stories like GE, talking about moving their assembly plants off-shore, probably up to Canada," Heitkamp said. "Boeing saying it's close to losing over a billion dollars. By not doing this, we literally are shutting down the aviation industry in our country."

Heitkamp says it will affect American worker who have good-paying manufacturing jobs, as well as smaller 'mom and pop' firms that could be hurt as well without a reauthorization.

"You cannot stand there with a straight face and tell me you care about American workers, and you care about American jobs, and oppose the Ex-Im Bank," said Heitkamp.

Since the charter expired, staff at the bank have only been able to complete deals already in the pipeline. And Heitkamp says she's concerned about the staff.

"A lot of these folks have skills that are highly valued in the private sector," said Heitkamp. "We want to make sure we hang on to the best and brightest."

But there are still hurdles in getting the bank reauthorized. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) opposes the bank.
