  • If you have been noticing some flocks of what looks to be sparrows getting up in front of your vehicle while driving through the country this winter, you might want to take a closer look next time. Many among us dismiss these flocks of small sparrow-sized birds as, well, sparrows. But rather than being brown, these flocks of small birds may be quite white. If so, there is a good chance they are horned larks or perhaps snow buntings.

  • Today we continue our series on October as American Archives Month.In North Dakota, the state archives are managed by the State Historical Society. In early 1907, the society received welcome funding and some office space in the Capitol for the collections. However, by December, the Bismarck Tribune reported that the archives already needed more room and more funds, saying: “The [Society] has a good start, but we are far behind our sister states, and much of historical value that ought to be in our possession has already gone to enrich the treasures of other states.”

Baritone Christopher Kenney plays Chester in "Fire Shut Up in My Bones," the Met's first performance of an opera by a Black composer. The performance will stream in movie theatres Saturday, October 23. ~~~ TellTale: Dakota Folklife and Stories is a collection of narratives describing the shared personal experiences and lore of life on the North Dakota plains. They feature interviews with senior citizens, many of whom are in eldercare facilities. The most recent episodes feature veterans.
