Wolf Bounty
On this date in 1910, an article appeared in the Oakes Times regarding the State Auditor’s view on the state wolf bounty, which had been in place since 1897. The auditor, D.K. Brightbill, was of the opinion that the bounty should be repealed as it was no longer practical for the state to hold such an act.

State Librarian Hazel Byrnes
On this date in 1964 the Bismarck Tribune announced that beloved North Dakota State Librarian Hazel Webster Byrnes was resigning to take a job in California. Born in 1886 in Iowa, she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1910 and earned her Master’s Degree in adult education from Columbia University. She married Frank Lloyd Byrnes in 1912. After working for teachers colleges in Nebraska and Iowa she became the first librarian at Mayville State College in 1924. Her husband farmed in Petersburg.

Wildlife in Winter
A quiet calm seems to come over the landscape during the winter months. But there is more going on than one might think. Many of the birds from summer have gone south, of course, but several species are permanent residents. And mammals remain as well, but their activities may be rather inconspicuous, particularly those living under the snow and ice. Few hibernate.

On this date in 1923, a strong holiday spirit prevailed in the city of Bismarck as residents made ready for the holiday. The shops in downtown Bismarck had thrummed with activity throughout the season. On this date, a Community Christmas event was set to start, with trumpeters stationed around the city, "adding a touch of the old-time method of observing Christmas, and calling the people to the community gathering."

Wednesday, September 8, 2021 - A Song for Liv is the latest book from photographer and retired professor Wayne Gudmundson. It explores his family’s roots from Iceland to North Dakota. ~~~ After a year off due to the pandemic, new inductees to the North Dakota Native American Hall of Honor will be celebrated during a ceremony at the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum in Bismarck tomorrow. Here to preview that event and to introduce us to the three 2021 honorees is Scott Davis, former Indian Affairs Commissioner.

Friday, September 10, 2021 - UND philosophy professor Jack Russell Weinstein is here to preview this Sunday’s WHY radio show when he’ll discuss “What is Machine Learning and Why is it Important to Philosophy?” His guest on Sunday will be Emily Sullivan, assistant professor of philosophy at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. Her research explores the intersection between philosophy and data and computer science. ~~~ Samantha Specks is the author of Dovetails in Tall Grass: A Novel. The book was inspired by the true story of the thirty-eight Dakota-Sioux men hanged in Minnesota in 1862. It’s a powerful tale of two young women connected by the fate of one man.
