  • 10/20/2007: On this date in 1922, a fire broke out in downtown Fargo that caused an estimated $160,000 in damages. Flames started in a store room of the Harrington Hardware Store, and spread quickly to other buildings on the Tyler Block.
  • 11/15/2006: Created in 1933, the Civil Works Administration was established under the President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal program to create jobs for millions of unemployed Americans. Though temporary, the jobs were a God-send for many Americans during the Depression.

Bakers of Grand Forks went on strike, leaving six companies short of help; despite this, production continued. Today in 1937, trucks again began deliveries, making it a little easier for consumers to “bring home the bread.”

  • 11/29/2006: On this day in 1921, the residents of Bismarck were still excited over the recent visit of Marshal Ferdinand Foch of France. During the visit, Foch was reported to have touched the spirit of the West. By then, little remained of Bismarck’s Old West, but residents were reminiscing about Bismarck’s earlier days—a time when the city truly resembled the pioneer days of the West.
