Boy Scouts
6/22/2008: Scouting is a great experience for young men but on this date in 1914 two young Boy Scouts had a little more excitement than normal at a camp-out on Sibley Island near Bismarck.
Counting Sheep
6/26/2008: While sheep probably aren't uppermost in our minds when we think of North Dakota, they aren't exactly divorced from our state, either. In the past, sheep and other livestock were a way to the future. In an agricultural state like North Dakota, that sort of way to the future was important.
VCSU’s V-12 Program
7/1/2008: At the outset of World War II, the United States began a massive ship building program designed to overwhelm the Axis power’s naval strength. As thousands of ships were constructed, the Navy realized that it would need to greatly expand its officer training program to man the large number of new vessels.
Shoot to Kill Watkins
7/8/2008: Melvin Pervis and Elliot Ness were well known names in the fight against Prohibition in Chicago. Long before them, on the plains of North Dakota, there was an agent on whose head the Eastern mobs had placed a $15,000 bounty. The Reverend Frank L. Watkins was well known by the bootleggers who both hated and respected him for his tenacity and cunning.
Russell Reid
7/9/2008: Each summer thousands of North Dakotans take time off from their hectic schedules to enjoy the many recreational opportunities available throughout the state. Historic sites commemorating North Dakota’s unique past, state parks set amongst North Dakota’s majestic rolling hills, or the wide-ranging entertainment opportunities available at Medora all provide an opportunity for escape from the hum-drum of daily life.
The Great American Folk Show: Episode 36
Episode 36 features musicians Gregory Page and Arthur Matos; Cowboy poet Bill Lowman; and a Dakota Diners visit to Darcy’s Café, with special guest Marilyn Hagerty.

Battle of the Grand Coteau
7/13/2008: On this day July 13, 1851 a small Métis hunting party engaged Dakota warriors at the battle of the Grand Coteau, southeast of present day Minot, North Dakota.
Minuteman Part II
7/14/2008: If you listened to Dakota Datebook on July 11, you heard of an open house for a Minuteman missile launch facility just outside of Michigan, North Dakota, in 1965. On this day, people were still excited over the concept of the Minuteman missiles. But they had a long wait ahead.
The Incorporation of Minot
7/16/2008: Today Minot is the largest city in Ward County, and the fourth largest in the State. It is home to an Air Force Base, the internationally renowned Norsk Høstfest and the State Fair. However, in the early 1880s, the ‘Magic City’s’ influential position in the region was quite uncertain.
Camp Burke
7/19/2008: In July of 1891 hundreds of people from all over the new state of North Dakota gathered at a place called Dana’s Grove—three miles east of Devil’s Lake.
