Scouting is a great experience for young men but on this date in 1914 two young Boy Scouts had a little more excitement than normal at a camp-out on Sibley Island near Bismarck. When most of the scouts had left the island, a rough looking man came into the camp, stole a 22-caliber rifle, all the food and several blankets and quickly departed. When the others returned, they hurried into town and contacted the police. The description matched a convict who had recently escaped from the Penitentiary but a search of the area failed to locate him. Many more camp-outs were held on Sibley Island but late at night when the light from the campfire danced among the shadows and the wind rustled the dry leaves in the trees, young eyes peered into the darkness as the story was repeated.
