  • 9/26/2008: In Skien, Norway, in 1855 artist Gustav I. Gulliksen was born. Delighting int the folklore of his native land, many of his paintings were inspired by the fairy tales Hans Christian Anderson and Absbjornsen and Moe. When Gulliksen immigrated in 1903, he brought this imaginative tradition with him to the United States.

  • 10/17/2008: By 1863, as Civil War casualties mounted, the Union faced a seemingly endless struggle to find new recruits. Caught between draft riots in the North and an increasing demand for more troops, President Abraham Lincoln approved a plan in early 1864 to seek volunteers from among Confederate prisoners of war. By summer, nearly 1,800 Confederate prisoners had taken an oath of allegiance to the United States and enlisted in Federal military service. For renouncing their Confederate allegiance, their peers derogatorily referred to them as “Galvanized Yankees”.

The Grand Forks Air Base had been established in the late 1950's and sorties of B52's flew from the newly established Strategic Air Command which, only two years earlier, had also begun installing the Minuteman II Missile wing. The influx of military paychecks marked a boost to the local markets.
