  • 1/20/2009: It was on this day in 1938 that the Walcott Reporter printed a story about a particularly interesting oak tree. Surveyors in 1870 had used the oak as a landmark when measuring land near the Sheyenne River south of Kindred. The oak was not an unlikely choice for a landmark on the North Dakota prairies, where it was most likely the only tree for miles.
  • 1/22/2009: The annual North Dakota Dairymen's convention opened in Bismarck on this date in 1930. The day was cold and blustery, so attendance wasn't as high as anticipated. Too bad, because the group was facing a crisis: too much butter.
  • 1/29/2009: On this day in 1981, Jon Gordon Langseth Jr. was born in Fargo.
  • 1/30/2009: Two stories from this date, in 1915, depicted conditions in Chicago due to rampant unemployment. The first described some 1500 unemployed civilians who protested, led by activist Lucy Parsons with a black banner that said, simply, "Hunger." Plain-clothes policemen attacked the protesters, using blackjacks and clubs, and a riot ensued. Among 27 arrested was a priest who carried a banner reading, "Give us this day our daily bread."

This world famous musician, band leader and showman was born on this date, March 11, 1903, near Strasburg, North Dakota. Much has been written about Lawrence himself ... but what about his parents? There wouldn't have been a Lawrence had it not been for the generations of Welks that preceded him.
