Jefferson Plan
8/16/2011: Part of Thomas Jefferson’s plan, when sending the Corps of Discovery across the American continent, was to foster positive relationships with the American Indians encountered along the way. Initial contact between Lewis and Clark and Native Americans would be a crucial first-step, but Jefferson hoped to further cement US-Indian relationships by inviting tribal leaders to Washington D.C. to introduce them to the wonders of American civilization and impress upon them the advisability of an alliance with the United States.

First Radio Broadcast
9/1/2011: Margaret Mead once said "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." On this date in 1981, a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens were excited to begin changing their piece of the world in North Dakota. Today marks the thirtieth anniversary of Bismarck’s first public radio station.

9/5/2011: If you tuned in Friday, you’ll remember that we left off in 1954 with four North Dakota Agricultural College professors at war with the college president. Their dispute would become the top news story of 1955.
The Spaniard at Fort Clark
9/23/2011: James Evans, a Spaniard employed under the newly-formed Missouri Company of St. Louis, raised a Spanish flag over the Mandan-Hidatsa trading post near Fort Clark on this date in 1796. It was the first and last time that a Spanish flag would fly in the vicinity, despite the fact that the area was in Spanish possession for over thirty years.
Ready for some football
9/24/2011: The first rules for American Football were written in 1876. Since then, the sport thrived, forming the game we know today. On this date in 1931, the Edmore Herald-News reported that local youth had developed an interest in the game.
Deadwood Fire
9/26/2011: A fire broke out in the frontier town of Deadwood on this date in 1879, destroying much of the town and sending many of its inhabitants elsewhere. Located in Dakota Territory, Deadwood had gained notoriety for both its lawlessness and lawless inhabitants.
Civil Defense
8/9/2010: Ending WWII, nuclear bombs exploded in mushroom clouds and destroyed thousands of lives at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Now, a new threat hovered on the horizon: nuclear war.
The Fighting Chaplain
8/5/2010: Tucked in a plastic sleeve among many other objects and many other shelves in the State Historical Society of North Dakota museum lower-level, is a piece of sheet music. Entitled "Our Fighting Chaplain," the music was written and played by the 116th Engineers Band. The band was no ordinary band and the chaplain, no ordinary chaplain.
Stutsman County Courthouse
8/4/2010: Built in 1883, six years before North Dakota became a state, the Stutsman County Courthouse is the oldest of its kind in North Dakota.
