What's in a Name?
3/28/2010: On this date in 1951, the Devils Lake World published a summary of a letter sent by Clarence A. Sagen, a former legislator out of Ramsey County, concerning his new life in Tacoma, Washington. The emphasis of this letter was on "life," as Sagen's wife had received a memorial resolution passed by the most recent North Dakota legislative assembly commemorating the deaths of past members of their body...his name among them.
Zip Codes
4/3/2010: Robert Moon first invented the ZIP code in the 1950s. It was originally a 3-digit code designed for mechanical sorting, which Moon thought would help postal services keep up with the influx of mail after WWII.
Dyed for Easter
4/4/2010: When Superintendent Ritchey of the Minot park system dyed a few rabbits and chicks for Easter, he thought it would amuse the youngsters. But then people wanted to buy the animals to give as gifts, and the simple dye job became recurrent, and more complex.
Hynek Rybnicek
4/16/2010: In the late 1940s, a penny went a long way. With just five cents, a child could wander to his local grocery store and treat himself to a Hershey chocolate bar. Moms could buy Kellogg's Corn Flakes for just 12 cents a box. But it was in the late 1940s that school children across North Dakota pooled their pennies for a greater cause.
Centennial Elm Tree
4/24/2010: President George Bush, Sr., presided over a ceremony at the State Capitol grounds in Bismarck on this date in 1989.
Shields and the Bear
4/25/2010: In 1952, a black bear lumbered into the outskirts of Shields. People there couldn't recall ever seeing a bear there before, but there was no denying its existence - several people had seen it. It was even spotted wandering through one man's barn yard, six miles southwest of town.
Snakes, Preachers, and Fire Festivals
4/26/2010: This week's news in 1900 included plans for the annual Fargo Fire Festival. A major portion of the city had burned to the ground seven years before, and the festival had become a means for celebrating the town's comeback.
Sims
5/2/2010: Sims is largely a ghost town in Morton County, although it garnered some attention as the site of an active, but haunted church, and was visited by former First Lady Laura Bush in 2008.
Marriage in North Dakota
5/3/2010: The North Dakota Century Code has a lot to say about marriage. The Century Code is the codification of all general and permanent law enacted since early statehood.
Charges Dropped
5/4/2010: Did Dickinson businessman, George Berzel get away with something when charges against him were dismissed? We'll let you be the judge.
