  • 3/28/2010: On this date in 1951, the Devils Lake World published a summary of a letter sent by Clarence A. Sagen, a former legislator out of Ramsey County, concerning his new life in Tacoma, Washington. The emphasis of this letter was on "life," as Sagen's wife had received a memorial resolution passed by the most recent North Dakota legislative assembly commemorating the deaths of past members of their body...his name among them.
  • 4/3/2010: Robert Moon first invented the ZIP code in the 1950s. It was originally a 3-digit code designed for mechanical sorting, which Moon thought would help postal services keep up with the influx of mail after WWII.
  • 4/4/2010: When Superintendent Ritchey of the Minot park system dyed a few rabbits and chicks for Easter, he thought it would amuse the youngsters. But then people wanted to buy the animals to give as gifts, and the simple dye job became recurrent, and more complex.
  • 4/16/2010: In the late 1940s, a penny went a long way. With just five cents, a child could wander to his local grocery store and treat himself to a Hershey chocolate bar. Moms could buy Kellogg's Corn Flakes for just 12 cents a box. But it was in the late 1940s that school children across North Dakota pooled their pennies for a greater cause.

  • 4/25/2010: In 1952, a black bear lumbered into the outskirts of Shields. People there couldn't recall ever seeing a bear there before, but there was no denying its existence - several people had seen it. It was even spotted wandering through one man's barn yard, six miles southwest of town.
  • 4/26/2010: This week's news in 1900 included plans for the annual Fargo Fire Festival. A major portion of the city had burned to the ground seven years before, and the festival had become a means for celebrating the town's comeback.
