Aloisius Joseph Muench

Aloisius Joseph Muench was born on this date in 1889 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The son of German immigrants, Muench was the oldest of eight children. He attended St. Boniface Parish School in Milwaukee and graduated from the Seminary of St. Francis de Sales. He received his Master’s from the University of Wisconsin, and his Doctorate in Theology from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

In Europe, Muench became known for organizing charities to help those affected by the First World War. In 1935, Pope Pius XI appointed Muench to be the third Bishop of Fargo at St. Mary’s Cathedral. His sermon, One World in Charity, was published in newspapers around the world. In 1959 he was elevated to Cardinal. He passed away in Rome in 1962, but is buried in Fargo.
