5/26/2013:
With an unusually long winter and an even colder spring, 2013 had many North Dakotans wondering if warmer weather would ever arrive. As tough as the weather has been so far, however, the spring of 1970 might have been worse. On May 26th of that year, the morning temperature in Fargo broke a 1947 record. A large high pressure ridge drifted south from central Canada, dropping the temperature to 29 degrees, and to the lower 30s across much of the state. Farmers and gardeners feared for their young spring plants as a light frost covered the tri-state area. On that day, the frigid temperature made Fargo the coldest spot in the nation.
