WALTER PIEHL RETROSPECTIVE (1962 - 2018) Exhibit runs: June 20 – August 3, 2019. The Arts Center Gallery is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is always free. This Retrospective showcases the scope of Walter's career and gives the public the opportunity to visually experience the evolution of an artist's style. Walter is an aficionado of history and art with a lifelong passion for Western Americana. This stems from his upbringing in Marion, ND in a ranching family that rode horses, raised stock and participated in rodeos. "I will always be a painter of Western Americana. The horse culture and the ranching culture were always so important to me-part of my everyday life. Pursuing art and pursuing that subject matter which was so important to me, naturally led me into all sorts of themes of the Wild West, of the tame West, of the rodeo and of the historic West." ~Walter Piehl His passion for rodeo, horses, cowboys, and cowgirls permeates almost every artwork. This exhibition is organized to highlight Walter's many suites, the hallmark of his work. Walter is widely recognized as one of North Dakota's senior painters and as the artist who singularly pioneered the contemporary cowboy art movement. On June 15, 2019 Walter Piehl was inducted into the ND Cowboy Hall Fame in the Western Arts & Entertainment Division. Piehl's father was an inductee back in 2012. Walter will be our special guest during the Downtown Arts Market on Thursdsay, July 18. During the event, he will demonstrate his dynamic painting process-the hallmark of his style. Walter will be joined by his son, cowboy poet Shadd Piehl and singer Jessie Veeder for an evening celebrating our Western culture. Don't miss it! The Walter Piehl exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association with support from the North Dakota Council on the Arts.
