“Where did the last year go?! It has been a year of change for the Arts Center, the arts community and me. Last October the Arts Center hired me to be the Director of Education and Exhibitions. My very first task in my new position was to take down the 57th Annual Show, Sally Jeppson’s last curated show at the Center. Now I am getting ready to install the 58th Annual show. I am excited and nervous. The anticipation of unwrapping the art work, the excitement of creating the story this work will tell and displaying everyone’s hard work creates an energy that feels like Christmas. I remember that same feeling of excitement and nervousness as a kid seeing the presents, smelling the food, and waiting for the family to arrive at Grandma’s house. I am feeling those very emotions as entry forms and artwork arrive bearing the names of old friends and new ones. We are excited to feature artists from around the state in varied mediums including painting, drawing, mixed media, fiber, and sculpture.
This year The Arts Center is honored to display one of Don Paul’s last finished pieces. Don Paul’s death, May 6, 2022, was a great loss to his family and the arts community. I once received a little manilla envelope in the mail addressed with Don’s handwriting. Inside were a collection of colorful copper test plates along with Don’s copious notes on technique. A few months prior, Don and I had discussed my current work on copper and how I might get different colors. This was not just a one off, Don’s unselfish help was freely given to many fellow artists. Don’s spirit lives on in of his example of generosity as well as in his sculpture, and in his jewelry. Please come see Don’s sculpture and the many other talented artists’ work at the 58th JFAA Annual Show, The opening will be September 15 at 5:30 pm. Refreshments will be provided. “ by Anna Jacobson
