ND Attorney General likely to sue over the new Clean Power Plan

North Dakota is likely to sue the Environmental Protection Agency over the Clean Power Plan. Prairie Public’s Emily Guerin has more.

On Monday, the EPA released its Clean Power Plan, which is designed to combat climate change by cutting carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. By 2030, every state must reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by a certain amount.

North Dakota gets over 70 percent of its electricity from coal. And like many coal-dependent states, North Dakota has to cut its carbon dioxide emissions rate by a lot -- about 45 percent, more than any other state except Montana.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says it will be "extremely difficult if not impossible" for the state to meet EPA’s target. It’s likely he will file a lawsuit sometime next week.
