Fargo lawmaker wants to give ND college graduates tax credits for student loan interest

A Fargo lawmaker wants to give college graduates with student loans from the Bank of North Dakota a tax credit for interest payments on those loans.

Rep. Pamela Anderson (D-Farego) said a good chunk of the Bank’s profits come from student loans.

"Every session, I keep saying we should give some of this back to the students, somehow, someway," Anderson said.

Anderson said her bill is aimed at people from North Dakota who stay in the state after graduation.

"They're probably going to go out and have dinner," Anderson said. "They might go buy a washer. So they're going to get a nice little bonus for staying in North Dakota, and for just being young kids. If we can just give them a little boost, I think it's a good thing to say, 'Thank you.'"

The bill will be heard in the House Finance and Taxation Committee.
