Bismarck-Mandan parent group wants to start school after Labor Day

A group of parents from the Bismarck-Mandan area says school should start after Labor Day.

The group wants to put that up for a vote in November of 2014. And it is launching an effort to get the initiative on the ballot.

"We can't change the weather in North Dakota," said group spokesman Kelly Heinert. "But maybe we can change the school schedules."

Heinert says it’s all about family.

"People can plan more vacations," said Heinert. "Grandparents can plan stuff. You can do more outside. We really want to spend time with the kids. It's simple -- it makes common sense."

Heinert says an organizing committee is being put together – and once 25 people are on that committee, the group will go to Secretary of State Al Jaeger for approval of ballot language. The group needs 13,452 signatures in order to get the measure on next November’s ballot.
