Minot State names Steve Shirley as new President

The state Board of Higher Education has tapped Valley City State University president Steve Shirley as the new President at Minot State.

Shirley was chosen from among three finalists.

Shirley says the challenges at Minot State will be a little different than what he faced at Valley City.

"Obviously there continues to be housing challenges, as far as affordable housing and those kinds of things, and certainly the impacts when you're talking about student and staff recruitment, so certainly that will be a key issue.  Certainly, there is basically zero percent unemployment out here and that creates challenges when you're dealing with 18-year-olds and whether or not they are going to University, or directly into the workforce.  So I think a lot of those issues are key issues and being new here, I look forward to getting to better understand and learn some of those issues."

The Board will now negotiate Shirley’s salary and compensation package – as well as a starting date. He replaces Dr. David Fuller, who is retiring.
