Burgum, other GOP governors urging Congress to pass the USMCA

Twenty-eight Republican governors have signed a letter to Congress, asking that the new US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement be passed.

This comes in the wake of Mexico ratifying it. Canada has not yet acted, either.

Gov. Doug Burgum was one of those signing the letter.

"In every material way, the new agreement is better for North Dakota than the old NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). Burgum told reporters. "Whether it's from an agricultural standpoint, a workforce standpoint, an energy standpoint -- it's better."

Burgum said Congress is so polarized right now that there’s been no movement on ratifying the deal.

"By doing that, they're actually hurting American workers, American farmers and hurting the American economy," Burgum said.

Burgum said it appears the Democrats in Congress will block President Trump from getting "a win."

Burgum said Canada is North Dakota’s number one trading partner, and Mexico is second – and both account for about $5 billion in annual exports.
