A group wants to place a measure on the ballot that would end the prohibition on marijuana in North Dakota.
The group has submitted a proposed initiated measure to amend North Dakota’s Constitution.
"It really is time," said Jody Vetter of Bismarck, the steering committee chairperson. "We can't keep arresting our citizens, even though it is an infraction -- it's still on your record. It just needs to stop the stigma."
Vetter said this would end the prohibition for adults. She said one of the major reasons to do this is because of the lack of availability of medical marijuana.
"Our group is made up of patients and veterans who are having trouble getting access to medical marijuana," Vetter said. "We need access, as well as being able to grow our own plants, and to allow edibles."
The measure limits individuals to 12 plants. It allows edible forms of marijuana. And it requires licensing of sellers.
It’s being reviewed by Secretary of State Al Jaeger. If approved for circulation, the group will need 26,904 valid signatures to get it on the ballot.
