Real ID demand steady in North Dakota

The federal deadline for getting a “real ID” is now May 3, 2023.

And the North Dakota Department of Transportation says its Driver’s License division is still seeing a strong demand for Real ID.

"Right now, we're at 45 percent of our licensed drivers and ID holders that are Real ID compliant," said DOT Driver's License director Brad Schaffer. "We're getting there."

Schaffer said with a little extra time, drivers are being encouraged to get the Real ID when they come in.

"We're running about 60-70 percent of people coming in to get a credential are leaving with a Real ID," Schaffer said.

Schaffer says drivers should make an appointment to come in to receive Real ID. He says driver’s license sites across the state normally have “same day” appointments available.
