Journalist Tim Giago ~ Oral Histories from StoryCorps and Breaking Barriers

Tuesday, August 27, 2019 – Journalist Tim Giago, upon seeing that his Native American people were not fairly represented, or represented at all, by main stream journalists, decided to do something about it. He started The Lakota Times, the very first independent Native American owned newspaper in the United States. He shares that story in this excerpt from the Dakota Journalists podcast as he visits with host Teri Finneman. ~~~ Chuck Lura shares a Natural North Dakota essay on Johnny Darters, a small fish found across the state. ~~~ Flooding has created hard times for many in Midwest, but it’s been great for mosquitoes. And with temperatures and flooding events expected to increase in the coming years, the region may become an even more welcoming place for those annoying insects. As Alex Smith reports for Harvest Public Media, some experts say we’re not ready to deal with the diseases they may carry. ~~~ Last summer, the StoryCorps mobile booth came to Bismarck, collecting oral histories. Today we have two excerpts from those recordings. First up is Loah Clement, who visted with her son Jason; then Karen Van Fossan in a visit with Peter Huff. ~~~ “Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains” is an oral history project of the Red River Rainbow Seniors, documenting what it was like to grow up when being “out” was not a practical consideration. Today we hear an excerpt from Randolph Mann.
