The House has approved a plan to give tribal colleges $5 million for workforce training programs.
The money would be administered by the Department of Commerce through grants.
The House Appropriations Committee had cut the amount the Senate approved from $5 million to $3 million. But that decision was overturned on the House floor.
Rep. Jim Kasper (R-Fargo) called the bill “historic.”
"SB 2218 is making a statement to the tribal nations of North Dakota that the people of North Dakota want to reach out our hands and enter into a new partnership with the tribes," said Kasper. "
The amendment to decrease the appropriation failed – and the bill passed 71 to 23.
