State employees shying away from electric cars

A small percentage of the 3600 cars in the North Dakota state fleet are electric cars – or hybrids.

"Currently, we have 10 electric Chevy volts," said State Fleet director Robin Rehborg. "We also have 50 other hybrids that are gas and electric."

Rehborg says state employees have been reluctant to use the electric cars -- especially in winter.

"They're afraid they're going to get stranded on the road," said Rehborg. "they're afraid they're going to run out of power."

But Rehborg says the Volt has a gas back-up -- that re-generates the electric motor. She also says while she encourages people to use the hybrids, she doesn't try to force the issue.

"Some people really like them," said Rehborg. "Some people say, 'No way.'"
