  • 11/4/2003: The first church bell to ring in North Dakota was at a mission called St. Joe. It was known as the "Angelus Bell."
  • 12/22/2003: One year ago today, North Dakota lost a passionate teacher and visionary, Dr. Anne Carlsen. She was 87 years old and her legacy was the Anne Carlsen Center for Children in Jamestown.

  • 12/28/2003: One doesn’t normally think of newspaper editors as life threatening, but in 1910, on this date, one was sitting in jail in Cando. Mr. Treadwell, editor of a Rock Lake newspaper, had shot two men in a pool room several days before, and nobody was sure if the men would survive.
  • 1/2/2004: This is part 3 of our story on Eagle Woman That All Look At, who in the 1860s, lived at Fort Rice on the upper Missouri with her husband, Major Charles Galpin, a licensed trader.
  • 1/3/2004: In January of 1957, the Brownee Bakery in Fargo turned out the world’s largest loaf of bread. They worked on it for 12 days before getting it right, and after 17 failures, they finally produced the perfect loaf.
  • 1/11/2004: In 1884, a site was selected in Towner County to become the new county seat. According to historical reports, one J. W. Connelly objected to the action of creating a new town for the site. County Commissioner Captain Prosper Parker, a County Commissioner, responded, “Gentlemen, we have been appointed to this committee to decide this location, and in virtue of our authority, we select this location and name the town ‘Cando’ to show you that we Can Do it.” Fist fights reportedly followed, but the board wasn’t swayed from its decision. Cando was built and became a city in 1901. Thirty-six years later, it made state history when Baker Rural Electric Cooperative became the first in North Dakota to energize its power lines.
  • 1/16/2004: Today marks the birthday of Edward M. Darrow, who was born in 1855 in Wisconsin. He was one of the earliest and most influential physicians in the Red River Valley.
  • 1/22/2004: Today is the birthday of Hariette Lake, who was born in 1909 in Valley City. Her mother was an opera singer, her father was a “traveling thespian”; and her grandfather was a violinist.
