Dorothy Stickney

6/3/2007:

Dorothy Stickney was born on June 21st, 1896 in Dickinson to Margaret and Dr. Victor Hugo Stickney. She made her first appearance of the stage of the Minot Theatre in 1921, giving recitations with the Southern Belles Concert Party. Dorothy sang and danced in vaudeville before moving to New York and Broadway in the 1920s. Although she would achieve great stardom, most notably in the play “Life With Father”, written by and co-starring her husband, Howard Lindsay, the road to fame was not easy. In fact, her initial failure to land parts in New York prompted her to write the poem, “You’re Not the Type”, which was published in Liberty magazine. Dorothy Stickney died at her home in New York on this date, June 2nd, 1998, less than three weeks shy of her one hundred and second birthday. A museum in Trenton, New Jersey and the theatre at Dickinson State are named in her honor.
