Lost Lands

10/4/2009:

In the days when the lands of the west were first being moved from federal to private ownership, various land districts were established to manage the transfer. It was a process that got a little confusing along the North and South Dakota border during an experiment that had some North Dakota land being managed by the Lemmon, South Dakota land district. Despite a shorter distance to Lemmon, citizens became frustrated with the additional paperwork required, and the public outrage was so great, that the experiment proved short-lived. So, on this date in 1910, the President of the United States was forced to issue an executive order transferring the land back to North Dakota districts. The experiment was the first and only case in which lands within a district were located in more than one state.
