9/25/2010:
The Izaak Walton League was formed in 1922 by sportsmen who wanted to save the outdoors for future generations. Today, there is only one chapter in North Dakota, in St. John. In the past, however, the organization had more presence here.
On this date in 1932, the league was involved in a special week set aside to encourage the preservation of dams in the state and the conservation of water. This date marked the second day of "Dam It Week" in North Dakota, as designated by the governor.
J. E. Campbell of Jamestown, state president of the Izaak Walton League, wrote that with organized backing, every county could conserve water, and he urged all local chapters to not overlook the opportunity.
The statewide designation raised awareness, and also resulted in some interesting headlines, such as was printed in the Edmore Herald-News:
"Dam Water! Conserve it!"
