Dewey Williams

North Dakota baseball player Dewey Williams was born on this date in 1916 in Durham, North Carolina. Nicknamed ‘Dee,’ Williams was a professional catcher for the Chicago Cubs from 1944 to 1947. During his first season with the Cubs, Dee scored twenty-seven runs. He played seven games against the Detroit Tigers in the 1945 World Series, although the Cubs lost. After 193 games with the Cubs, Dee joined the Cincinnati Reds in 1948.

After five years of major league play, Williams moved to North Dakota where he spent the next ten years playing for the Williston Oilers, the Bismarck Barons, and the Minot Mallards. After his retirement from baseball, Williams lived with his family in Williston, where he passed away in 2000.
