June 18, 2023: GameChanger - Indian Relocation and Termination with Donald Fixico

Sunday, June 18, at 5pm CT:

Hear a GameChanger discussion with Professor & Author Donald Fixico on the Urban Indian Relocation Program, which the US paired with the Termination program.

In the 1950s, the government strongly encouraged American Indians to move to certain cities – initially, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dallas.

HumanitiesND brought in Donald Fixico (via Zoom) to talk about it. Fixico is a highly honored historian, enrolled in the Sac and Fox nation, and he literally wrote the book – or books – on this subject.

Fixico talks with Larry Skogen, the President Emeritus of Bismarck State College, with a doctorate in history and a thesis that was related to this topic, as well. Their discussion ranges far and wide, from key Supreme Court decisions to the impact of having people from different tribes mixing in urban Indian centers, to the shift from very few Indians in cities to the majority of American Indians now being urban.
