North Dakota is among the top five states for entrepreneurship - in fact, it is number one.
According to a report by the State of Entrepreneurship Index, or SEI, North Dakota ranks number 1 ahead of California, New York, Kentucky and New Hampshire. Bruce Gjovig is CEO and Entrepreneurship Coach for UND's Center for Innovation Foundation. He says it comes as no surprise because entrepreneurs want to be where the opportunities are - and there are many in North Dakota. He says that doesn't occur by accident.
"It's been nice to see; we've been laying the groundwork for 30 years, and it's also nice to be in a time where you can see it fully bloomed so we can harvest on that opportunity. Entrepreneurs need a lot of things to be successful - they need a lot of good talent, they need investment, they need opportunity, and all of those factors have come together. It's terrific."
Gjovig says North Dakota enjoys wild success in sectors across the board - in energy, agriculture, technology, manufacturing and biosciences. He says because of the diversity of the growing economy, the success and growth could sustain for a long time.
