EERC to develop technology to produce renewable chemicals

The Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota has been awarded a grant to develop and commercialize a new technology for producing fluids used in petroleum production.

Chris Zygarlicke is Associate Vice President for Strategic Projects and University Relations with the EERC.

"We have developed a novel hydroconversion series of catalysts and the catalysts just help you convert a vegetable oil to renewable chemicals - fluids. So that is, essentially, the technology."

During the last couple of days, we’ve been focusing on the rising number of injuries and deaths in North Dakota’s oil patch.

Trauma admissions have doubled or tripled at hospitals in the west. More men are dying on drilling rigs and other oil industry workplaces than ever before.

Today, we examine how these trends are affecting families. Black Gold Boom reporter Todd Melby traveled to Montana to learn more.

OSHA Authorizes Oil and Gas Safety Course

The North Dakota Safety Council will host a pilot course on oil and gas safety. The course was authorized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The pilot courses will take place in Bismarck, Williston and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

OSHA 5810 put together a committee of oil representatives from across the country to address safety issues specific to the oil and gas industries.
