North Dakota is reporting 10 human cases of West Nile Virus so far this season.
That’s up by two from last week.
The Health Department’s Michelle Feist says the latest cases were reported in Burleigh and Dickey Counties. She says so far this has been a low year for West Nile. And Feist says this isn’t a time to let your guard down – because even though there are fewer mosquitoes, they’re still out there.
"We are still recommending that people wear repellant," said Feist. "Especially in the evening hours, where people are more likely to encounter a mosquito that could transmit West Nile Virus. Or if you're doing yardwork that could stir up mosquitoes."
Feist says because it's been hot during the day, mosquitoes seek shelter in cooler areas."
"You could be doing landscape or yardwork, and you stir them up, and they may decide to bite you at that time," said Feist.
The first frost will kill the mosquitoes.
