Bismarck, ND – Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND) says President Bush should name a Supreme Court nominee who represents the mainstream of America.
Conrad says it should be a well-respected jurist who can command majority support -- and not just the 54-vote majority in the US Senate.
"This is an opportunity for the President to bring the country together, to be a uniter, not a divider," said Conrad.
Conrad also had a recommendation for the President.
"If he would name the Attorney General (Alberto Gonzales), I believe he would enjoy very broad support, and would get at least 70 -- maybe 80 votes in the United States Senate."
Gonzales has come under fire from both right-wing and left-wing groups. The Bush administration has asked its base to tone down the rhetoric against Gonzalez.
