Fourth of July Safety Tips

The North Dakota Safety Council urges parents to keep in mind some safety tips for their children during the Fourth of July.

Serena Schmidt is the Home and Community Coordinator for the council. She said heat stroke, or heat exhaustion, and firework safety are the major concerns during the holiday.

Schmidt said young children should not be allowed to light off fireworks and older children only should with adult supervision.

“They’re (fireworks) fun; they’re fun to watch and hear, but really we should leave it up to the professionals,” Schmidt said. The firefighters put on a great firework show. We really encourage you to leave it up to the professionals but if you are going to light off fireworks make sure your children are safe; that’s our top priority.”

Schmidt said it is important to not relight any fireworks. She said the fireworks also need to be disposed properly.
