The North Dakota Information Technology Department has detected a cyber attack on a server used by Workforce Safety and Insurance.
ITD CIO Mike Ressler says once the breach was discovered, WSI was notified immediately. The server was secured and the information on it was locked down. Ressler says personal and identifiable information of WSI employees was being stored on that server. He says the breach was discovered on June 10th and the investigation into it is ongoing.
"As of right now we don't believe any of the individual's information was copied and sent off the server, but that's what this investigation is validating."
WSI Director Brian Klipfel says the server contained no information files on any injured worker claims. He says only information in regard to incident files and payroll reports may be at risk. He says ITD and WSI are doing everything in their power to stay ahead of the problem and take any necessary precautions.
"We're taking a look at the information and trying to establish for sure how many people may have been affected by the potential access to their personal information. We're working very diligently on getting names, addresses and so forth so we can somehow get these people contacted. We're also working with a call center and getting it set up so once we sign a contract with this vendor we can use that call center to help take some calls from people who feel they may have been affected. And if there has been any damage to anybody's credit, because of this, they would have a credit repair service also."
Klipfel says information regarding the cyber attack can be found at www.workforcesafety.com/security. He says it will be updated regularity with answers to frequently asked questions about the incident.
