House acts on sports car 'front plates,' stop sign violation fines

The North Dakota House passed a measure saying two seater sports cars do not need front license plates.

The bill’s sponsor, New Salem Republican Representative Gary Kreidt, told the House those high-end, high-dollar cars are designed without the need for front plates, and you have to drill into the fiberglass to install those plates.

"When people invest a considerable amount of money in a sports car, why do you want to mutilate it?" Kreidt said.

The bill’s opponents argued the front plates are necessary for gas stations to identify people who drive off without paying for the gas.

"If you can afford a $70-80,000 sports car, I think you have enough money to pay your gas bill," Kreidt said. "You wouldn't be the individual that's driving off."

The vote was 67 to 25. The bill will now be considered by the Senate.

The House also voted in favor of a bill to double the fine for running a stop sign, from $20 to $40.

"The $20 fine we've seen from running stop signs, and failure to yield, is pretty low," said Rep. Terry Jones (R-New Town). "It is a growing concern."

The bill passed 56-36 and now goes to the Senate for consideration.
