Aeronautics Commission director would like to see the Canadian border reopened

North Dakota Aeronautics Commission director Kyle Wanner says he would love to see the Canadian Border opened up again – because some Canadians would fly out of North Dakota’s airports to US and other destinations.

"When you go back to the 2012-2013 time frame, when you look at Grand Forks, Minot and even Williston, we actually saw quite a bit of Canadian traffic that came down to the state," Wanner said.

Wanner says the downturn in the oil industry affected that. He said then COVID-19 hit – and the border was essentially closed.

"It would be nice to get back to a period where we can once again attract Canadian travelers, who would actually come down and shop in our state, and actually fly out," Wanner said. "There are some larger populous areas just north of the border — particularly Winnipeg — that are places that in the past, we have been able to draw passengers from."
