  • 7/23/2013: Long-time North Dakota rodeo producer Walter Piehl Sr. was born on this date in 1915 in Marion to John and Fern Piehl. He was educated in Marion and grew up farming with horses.
  • 7/6/2013: Bob Rindt was born in early July of 1910. He graduated from Drake High School and become a school administrator, but he was also a rodeo entertainer.
  • 7/3/2013: On this date in 1908, Joseph and Estelle Cordner were busy celebrating the birth of their daughter Marie just two days before. Born on the family farm near Moffit, Marie later moved to Bismarck, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1926. In 1938, she married James Tyler in Poplar, Montana.
  • 6/29/2013: People in the Turtle Mountains have been racing horses for decades. Many still talk about the informal tracks in the hills, and some families have been participating in the sport for generations.
  • 6/27/2013: On this date in 1980, the family and friends of Archie Campbell were mourning his June 26 death. He was born to Alexander and Maude Campbell on July 13, 1897, on a farm west of Harvey.
  • 6/24/2013: Long-time Killdeer Mountains Round-up Rodeo supporter, Robert “Bob” Sand, died on tomorrow’s date three years ago. Bob was active with the rodeo in many capacities over the years, and he and his wife, Edna, served as Grand Marshals for the 2008 rodeo.
  • 6/21/2013: Today and tomorrow, the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame will celebrate its 16th induction ceremony in Medora. Eight inductees will be honored, including well-known North Dakotans like former rancher Leroy “Bud” Perry of Mountrail County, cowboy poet Bill Lowman of Sentinel Butte, rodeo stars Tom Solberg and Lynn Linseth, and Harold Schafer, founder of the Gold Seal Company, a key player in the development of Medora as an historic tourist site.
  • 9/14/2012: The noted Hunkpapa Lakota warrior, Rain-in-the-Face, died at his home on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota on this date in 1905. His name was one that often carried terror with it, and he was among the Indian leaders who defeated Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment at the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn.
  • 11/8/2007: George Francis Will, of Bismarck and a well-known anthropologist, was born on this date in 1884, the son of Oscar H. Will, pioneer nurseryman and seed man of Bismarck, and Elvira (Bird) Will.
  • 10/31/2007: Dakota Growers Pasta Company, founded on this date in 1991, has been so successful that it has grown to be the third largest pasta manufacturing company in North America.
